How much gym flooring do you need?
Start with the area you want to cover, then draw a layout using the dimensions of your chosen mat or roll. Dividing floor area by tile area gives a starting quantity; the layout tells you whether cuts, columns and awkward edges require more material.
Measure the floor in metres
For a rectangular area, multiply length by width. A room measuring 4m by 3m has an area of 12m². Measure the actual space to be covered, including alcoves, rather than relying on an estate-agent floor plan.
For an L-shaped room, divide the floor into rectangles that do not overlap. Calculate each area separately and add them together. For example, a 4m x 3m rectangle plus a 2m x 1m extension gives 12 + 2 = 14m².
Convert the area into a starting mat quantity
Divide the floor area by the coverage of one mat, then round up to a whole mat. A 100cm x 100cm mat covers 1m² before cutting. A 50cm x 50cm mat covers 0.25m², so four cover 1m² before cutting.
| Floor area | 1m x 1m mats | 50cm x 50cm mats |
|---|---|---|
| 6m² | 6 | 24 |
| 12m² | 12 | 48 |
| 20m² | 20 | 80 |
These are arithmetic examples, not final order quantities. They assume the whole area can be covered without extra material for the layout. Check the selected product's actual dimensions.
Draw the cuts before ordering
Mark doors, columns and fixed obstacles on your plan. Draw each tile to scale and identify where it needs trimming. An offcut may fit elsewhere, but do not count on reusing it until you have checked its dimensions and any connection requirements.
There is no single waste percentage that suits every room. A rectangular room aligned with the tile size can use material differently from a narrow room with several recesses. Count the complete mats needed by the layout, then decide whether you want spare matching material for future repairs.
Check thickness and fitting separately
Coverage tells you how much material you need; it does not establish suitability for your equipment or subfloor. Check the product's construction, installation instructions and any impact limitations. Also consider door clearance, transitions to adjacent floors and edging.
For rolls, use the actual roll width and length and draw the seam positions. Floor area alone can conceal waste from short sections or an awkward room width.
Compare products and request a sample
Our gym flooring collection compares PRO mat thicknesses and links to individual specifications. The 20mm PRO mat is listed at 100cm x 100cm, covering 1m² before trimming.
Request a flooring sample to compare the finish. If your room has irregular dimensions, send us your measurements so the proposed layout and product choice can be checked before ordering.
